Affording VCU

Your education is an investment in your future. Check out the payoff of attending VCU on our “After VCU” page, estimate your costs using our tuition and fees calculator or keep reading to learn about out-of-state scholarship opportunities and financial counseling resources.

Scholarships for out-of-state undergraduate students

Students who are not residents of Virginia pay higher tuition* because VCU is a public institution and a portion of the cost to Virginia students is subsidized by the state.

However, out-of-state students may qualify for a four-year, merit-based scholarship of a minimum of $10,000. These scholarships are meant to acknowledge academic achievements and to offset the higher tuition and fees charged to non-Virginia students. To be considered, you must:

  • Have a minimum 3.0 high school GPA to qualify for at least a $10,000 scholarship.
  • Have a minimum 3.3 high school GPA to qualify for at least a $12,000 scholarship.
  • Not be a Virginia resident.
  • Be applying to a VCU degree-seeking program as a first-time freshman.

Students who are awarded one of these scholarships and who choose to attend in the fall, must enroll on a full-time basis over the fall and spring semesters each year and remain in good academic standing to continue receiving the scholarship.

Additional scholarships: VCU offers other kinds of scholarships. Learn about the different types we offer incoming students as well as scholarships we offer continuing students you may want to apply for later on. Because we know money is a big deal all four years.

* Your residency/domiciliary classification (whether you are considered a resident of Virginia or not) determines whether you pay the in-state or out-of-state tuition rate. Eligibility for in-state tuition is governed by the Code of Virginia. Residency/domiciliary classification is determined at the time of admission to VCU.

A word about our location

Awesome. That’s the word. We’re a very urban campus in a very cool city. But nature and the James River are just a stone’s throw away. Plus we’re two hours from D.C., two hours from the beach and two hours from the mountains.

Get to know Richmond (you’ll be glad you did).
