The following instructions are for domestic applicants, including U.S. citizens, permanent residents, refugees/asylees and undocumented students. If you are a non-immigrant currently residing outside of the U.S. and plan to come on an F1 or J1 visa, or a non-immigrant currently residing in the U.S. under a visa, please visit the international admissions website.

New transfer applicants to undergraduate programs on the Monroe Park Campus must complete the application that corresponds with their intended term of entry:

Former VCU students are deemed returning applicants and must complete the Application for Readmission, submit an application fee and all required materials if they have:

  • Not attended VCU in a degree program for three or more successive fall and spring semesters
  • Been suspended from VCU
  • Attended another college or university since attending VCU and three or more successive fall and spring semesters have passed

Application fee

The online application fee is $70 and may be paid by credit card. The application fee is nonrefundable.

Application guidelines

  • Submit only one application for a specific semester (i.e., one application for fall 2022)
  • Apply to only one undergraduate degree program

Guaranteed Admission Agreements

VCU has entered into guaranteed admission agreements with the Virginia Community College System, Richard Bland College and College of Southern Maryland. VCU also has specific program articulation agreements with some VCCS colleges and RBC. All VCCS students must complete a letter of interest to be eligible for guaranteed admission agreement benefits.

Undergraduate health sciences programs

Courses and credit requirements for admission vary for the undergraduate programs in clinical laboratory sciences, clinical radiation sciences, dental hygiene and nursing on the MCV Campus.

Applicants to any of these programs must submit supplemental admission materials, all of which are available on our main Apply page. Each program uses a self-managed application process and faculty committees to evaluate criteria appropriate to the profession.

Why we ask for your Social Security number

Your Social Security number is not required for admission consideration, but it is necessary for applicants who want to be considered for financial aid and the Hope Scholarship/Lifetime Learning tax credit. To protect your privacy, your Social Security number will not be used as your VCU student identification number.

If you’re interested in transferring to VCU, please review the guidelines below.

  • Priority application review will be given to transfer applicants who have completed at least 30 semester (45 quarter) hours at their former institution(s).
  • Transfer applicants should be in good standing with previous institutions attended.
  • Transfer applicants should present a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 preferred from all accredited institutions to be competitive for admission to VCU.
  • Transfer applicants with fewer than 30 semester (45 quarter) hours also will be reviewed on the basis of their high school performance and should submit their high school transcripts.

Test scores

For the Fall 2022 admissions cycle, all applicants will be eligible for test score optional review, regardless of GPA. Applicants who are able to take a standardized test and would like the scores to be used in our application review may still submit scores. All students will receive a holistic application review.

As always, the university will select applicants who present the strongest qualifications in scholastic achievement and potential, and through a holistic review of other evidence of potential including the strength of character. Each applicant will continue to be reviewed on an individual basis.


Transfer applicants must submit an official transcript from each previously attended college or university, including summer schools. If less than 30 semester (45 quarter) hours have been completed, applicants also must submit high school transcripts.

Official transcripts must be delivered to the Office of Admissions unopened and sealed in their original envelope (mail to: VCU Office of Admissions, Box 842526, Richmond, VA 23284-2526).

Permanent residents

Applicants who are not U.S. citizens but are authorized to live and work in the U.S. on a permanent basis can apply for admission to VCU as degree-seeking transfer students. In addition to providing all required application materials by the stated deadlines, permanent residents must provide a copy of their green card or other residency document. 

English language proficiency

Applicants whose native language is not English must exhibit English language proficiency by meeting at least one of the following criteria:

  • Reside in the U.S. for 10 or more years
  • A score of at least 22 on the Reading test of the SAT
  • Complete six semester hours of college-level English composition with the grade of C or better (excluding ESL classes)
  • Present a TOEFL score of 70 or more on the internet-based test (undergraduates) with the exception of the College of Engineering, which requires an 80 or more on the internet-based test; Reading 13-18, Listening 12-19 and Writing 21-23 PBT; or IELTS of 6.0 (academic band score) and 6.5 for engineering. The required PTE score is 53 or 7.5 TOEFL Essentials (8.5 for engineering).

Computer requirement

All VCU students are required to have a personal computer. The university annually sets minimum specifications for computers for each new entering class. You can buy a computer at RamTech for on-campus support and service.

Some departments and schools recommend a specific configuration from among the options outlined by the university. Check with your school or college to make sure the minimum specifications are sufficient for your course of study.

Read all instructions in the application materials, noting the application deadlines.

Choose the email address you will use for VCU correspondence. Make sure it stays active for at least one year since we will use it to contact you throughout the application process.

Answer all questions on the Application for Admission.

Include your Social Security number on your application if you want to be considered for financial aid. Please note: While VCU does not require your Social Security number for admission consideration, it is necessary for applicants who wish to be considered for financial aid to provide it to the university. To protect your privacy, your Social Security number will not be used as your VCU student identification number.

Check the departmental website of the program to which you are applying for specific application requirements, including portfolio and audition requirements for programs in the School of the Arts.

Submit supplemental materials, if necessary — required of applicants to Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies or MCV Campus undergraduate programs (i.e., clinical laboratory sciences, clinical radiation sciences, dental hygiene and nursing).

Submit the required official transcripts from each college or university attended.

Please note: For the Fall 2022 admissions cycle, all applicants will be eligible for test score optional review, regardless of GPA. Annual security and fire safety report

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is committed to assisting all members of the community in providing for their own safety and security. As required by federal law (The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, 20 U.S.C.1092(f), known as the “Clery Act”), the university publishes an Annual Security and Fire Safety Report, which contains information regarding campus security, crime reporting policies, personal safety and crime prevention, and fire and crime statistics for our various campus locations.
